On March 28, students in Mr. Nizewitz’s AP Microeconomics and Macroeconomics classes at Connetquot High School participated in the Economics Initiatives presentations, showcasing their in-depth analyses of the current economy and potential strategies for future growth.

Divided into groups, students tackled pressing economic issues such as corporate taxes, infrastructure spending, Medicare and student loan relief, presenting their findings and proposed policies to their peers.

Following the presentations, classmates engaged in a dynamic question and answer session, challenging one another’s perspectives and fostering critical discussions. The event concluded with breakout groups, where students reflected on the potential impact of their proposed policies. This initiative not only deepened students' understanding of economic policy but also contributed toward their achievement of the NYS Seal of Civic Readiness, recognizing their engagement in civic and economic discourse.

This year, Connetquot High School has introduced a new mock trial team, giving students the opportunity to practice their legal skills by competing against other schools. Recently, the team faced off against Harborfields High School in a fictional case involving a superintendent suing a student for defamation.

The case is provided by the Suffolk County Bar Association and students practice both defense and plaintiff roles, using an affidavit provided by the bar association to guide their preparation.

Currently, the team has 12 students from tenth through twelfth grade. The team is led by Mr. Faivre, an attorney and social studies teacher at the high school.

Following their most recent debate, the top 16 teams from Suffolk County will move on to a regional competition, with winners advancing to the state level.
