The Edith L. Slocum School will be continuing the Family Connection Night this school year. This program allows time for students to connect with their families and discuss important character values!!!
Creating open communication with family helps improve relationships and self-esteem in children. Countless studies indicate that improving self-esteem is a major factor in improving academic achievement, student behavior and helping young people resist drug abuse. The emphasis of Family Connection Night is to develop students with a high regard for themselves, their school and others. Therefore, Family Connection Night offers another way for parents and teachers to work together in helping students reach their full academic potential and grow as healthy as possible. A special theme is designated for each month of the school year. Our schedule is as follows:
Parents and staff receive a newsletter offering some tips and advice on how to promote the theme at home and in the classroom. Teachers will reinforce the theme of the month in their classroom. These simple messages encourage students to consider the meaning of civic and personal values and the application of those values in their daily lives. Parents can help by spending time at home talking with their children about each theme and perhaps, planning a family activity each month that can promote the theme.
By all working together, we have enormous opportunity to help children be the BEST they can be! If you have any questions or suggestions, contact Ms. Desz, our School Social Worker and Coordinator of the Program.
