The name of the organization Tri-M Music Honor Society stands for Modern Music Masters. The purpose of this organization is to inspire music participation, create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, and promote leadership in the music students of secondary schools. Tri-M is under the sponsorship and supervision of NafMe, formerly MENC: The National Association for Music Education (MENC), 1806 Robert Fulton Drive, Reston, VA 20191.
Student selection for Tri-M is based on a combination of ensemble enrollment, academic achievement and a personal statement. Students must be enrolled in a music ensemble at Ronkonkoma Middle School and achieved and maintained a 95 or above average last school year for the ensemble(s). In addition, they must have at least a 90 overall average from last school year. Lastly, students submit a personal statement about why being a member of Tri-M is important to them and why music is valued in their life.
