Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is based on excellence in the following five areas:

  • Scholarship
  • Leadership
  • Character
  • Service
  • Citizenship

A student must achieve an overall average of 92% or higher, with no rounding and no failures, from the third quarter of sixth grade through the end of the third quarter of seventh grade, satisfying the criterion of scholarship.

The quality of leadership refers to those students who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and maintains a clean disciplinary record. This is based on evaluations submitted by our teachers, coaches and club advisers.

The final two criteria are service and citizenship. Service involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community. The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of community involvement and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility in community activities and organizations and school clubs.  Students must participate in at least TWO school clubs or sports during both their 6th and 7th grade years, and complete at least TEN hours of community service during that same time frame.

Students are then asked to complete an essay prompt.  All essays must be handwritten in school during the designated time.

The National Junior Honor Society Faculty Advisory Committee will review all applications and essays, and students selected for membership will be notified by letter and invited to attend the Induction Ceremony in October. All selected students will be required to maintain an overall average of 92% or higher with no failures, maintain membership in at least two sports or clubs, perform at least ten hours of community service and maintain a clean disciplinary record.
